Help! I think I have just lost emerge!

I updated portage, and then did an emerge -u world.
After an hour or so of compiling I find a whole load of errors on my
screen and emerge has gone.

>From what I can gather from the error messages emerge was trying to
replace itself.

Is there anyway to get emerge back, or does that mean a reinstall?
