I've noticed two odd issues with emerge clean. First is that for some packages it wants to protect an old version while selecting a newer. Allowing this to go removes the new one, which overwrote many of the old files, leaving the package useless. Second issue is that it sometimes, when removing an old version, removes files that had been updates with the install of a new version. Re-emerging fixes the problem, obviously.
I'm trying to be careful, I have an old version of GCC installed, and I'd like to clean it, but I don't want to risk removing the new files. Is there any way to see, exactly, what files will be removed? Is this a known issue, and is there anything I can do to repair the database? /jgt
