Works for me using the j2sdk1.4, which I downloaded from Sun.

    rkilgore phoenix: cd mozilla/plugins
    rkilgore phoenix: ls -l libjavaplugin_oji.so
    lrwxrwxrwx    1 rkilgore users          67 2003-02-03 00:44 libjavaplugin_oji.so 
-> /usr/local/j2sdk1.4.1_01/jre/plugin/i386/ns610/libjavaplugin_oji.so

And I can access pages with java applets.
