If you follow the gentoo mount configuration recommendations, /boot isn't 
mounted automatically, so klogd won't find it there at load time.

If I'm reading the klogd man page correctly, klogd _should_ find 
/usr/src/linux/System.map, but it doesn't (at least on this box, I haven't 
checked the other gentoo box). The third location for System.map listed in 
the man page, /, seems to do the trick. If I place my System.map on the root, 
klogd loads symbols from it and all is well.
