If you issue `startx` and X fails to start, there is a message dumped to the console that tells you why it failed. Why didn't you tell us what it said? Visit http://www.nvidia.com/view.asp?PAGE=support_faqs and you'll find more information. What does your /etc/modules.d/nvidia say? What does `lsmod` say?
