this is not what I was hoping to hear ... 

Is there not a way to build kernel modules on another machine to work with the 1.4_rc2 
ISO image.
there must be a way. 

If not I suggest we start a site called insmod.gentoo.org where modules not included 
in the ISO image 
can but downloaded from that can be loaded into the ISO kernel startup to prevent 
problems like this.

the only other option I can think of is looking at knoppix to get my machine on the 
net and then 
doing an install from there.

I would of course prefer doing it the gentoo way.
