hm... thanks so much.  This is a laptop, so maybe there is a pci kernel option i am 
leaving out?? iow, i may need some other pci option aside from acpi, because iirc i 
thought i had seen a webpage where a fellow was running acpi on this machine.  

i actually just got apm working on this box (it wouldn't before because i didn't know 
that many new thinkpads require the CONFIG_APM_ALLOW_INTS option).  Thanks so much for 
your help.
