alt-F# should work just fine.  what you're seeing there is a login prompt 
asking for a username/password combo...  since the password was radomised at 
boot up, you need to use "passwd" in the first screen (alt-F1) to set a 
memorable password, and then use it on the other screens.

screen 1
  # passwd
  <change your password>
  alt-F2

screen 2:

  login: root
  password: <the new password>
