OK, I tried it, and it does indeed "just work," except that I had to tinker with the ebuild. The line truetype? (x11-libs/xft) would not compute, so I cahnged it to truetype ? =x11-libs/xft-2.0.1 just to get the ebuild to complete. Now most everything is goodness.
