Also, most of the time when apps complain about missing DGA mode it
is because of unsufficient permissions for the user executing them.
Try running vmware as root (perhaps even on X started as root) and
see if it still complains.
I heard that setting rw permissions on /dev/mem for the
respective user (for example by creating a group "dga", chgrp-ing
/dev/mem, setting g+rw on /dev/mem and adding the user to group dga)
sometimes helps with this.
I have my main user in the "root" group, which is only acceptible as
I a the only user of my system, but works around a lot of problems
(i.e. calling halt, or using svgalib) sometimes.
NOTE: all of the above suggestions are security risks, so think
twice.
