I use one of the Via mini-itx boards with embedded C3/800Mhz CPU. It runs Gentoo 1.4/current portage tree just fine but as stated, only with the i586 optimizations. I believe the Gentoo user forums had some threads in the past on this. Apparently the C3 does not implement 1 "optional" instruction in the x686 insruction set and gcc makes use of that in the x686 optimizations.
That's what I've read and understood from past discussion on this subject. I could be completely wrong though. :) Patrick -----Original Message----- From: mikepolniak [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] Sent: Friday, February 21, 2003 5:58 PM To: [EMAIL PROTECTED] Subject: Re: [gentoo-user] Via C3 optimization On 00:23 Sat 22 Feb , Jacob Gemmell wrote: > I've been looking at getting one of the various dirt cheap Linodws PCs > out there with the Via C3 processor and loading Gentoo on it. Last April i built a mini pc box running a VIA C3 EZRA 866. Put gentoo on it. It only runs under i586 optimizations. Runs cool, really dont need a CPU fan, but its a bit slower than my Duron 700 in compiling stuff, (i dont have the pc any longer). Its great for normal use, a bit slow for the impatient 'emerger'.
