To answer my own issue (for the archives' sake), the problem was simply a malformed node /dev/tty3; unfortunately, I've lost the ls output now, but after discovering that openvt was failing dismally, and INIT: c3 respawning was getting to be an issue, I found that the file /dev/tty3 was a real file, not a nod.
