As 4.2.99 isn't the "stable" version, it's masked and you have to emerge 
it differently.  You can either do:

[EMAIL PROTECTED] ACCEPT_KEYWORDS=~x86 emerge xfree

or

emerge /usr/portage/x11-base/xfree/xfree-4.2.99.4.ebuild

However, as the above thread notes, 4.3.0 is out, so soon there'll be
ebuild for that as well :)
