Hi, I am a novice on Gentoo - I played around with Mandrake 9.0 which seems user(novices) friendly - BUT I would like to try out and learn some linux ropes - problem if something goes wrong I have no idea what to do.
I have a standalone PC - not connected to another PC - have a modem internet dialup connected. I have a Celeron 600 mhz processor 256 mb ram 1,7 Gig HD for the porposes of testing Gentoo - other Hd's safely out of the way. I have downloaded Gentoo linux version 1.4rc2 live cd i686. It seem to have all the files up to stage3 and packages. I am using Gentoo linux documentation - Gentoo Linux 1.4_rc2 Installation instructions. All goes well up to Code Listing 9.3 chroot /mnt/gentoo /bin/bash Kindly see the rest as being send to the screen..... The following is obtained by redirection of standard output................ command .. env-update = >>> Note: /etc/make.profile isn't available; an 'emerge sync' will probably fix this. >>> Regenerating /etc/ld.so.cache... ********************************* command .. emerge sync = >>> Note: /etc/make.profile isn't available; an 'emerge sync' will probably fix this. >>> starting rsync with rsync://rsync.gentoo.org/gentoo-portage... rsync: getaddrinfo: rsync.gentoo.org 873: Temporary failure in name resolution rsync error: error in socket IO (code 10) at clientserver.c(97) ****************************************** What does the command - emerge xxxx - do/means ?? The /etc/make.profile -> /usr/portage/profiles/default-x86-1.4 link exist and pointing to non-existend directory. Trust that somebody may have some time to help me Thanks in advance Johan --- Outgoing mail is certified Virus Free. Checked by AVG anti-virus system (http://www.grisoft.com).
