I'll let the decision be based on the quality of the kmail code in general. 
Also I would probably use it as a case in my research so it needs to be 
easilly extensible. In case I can work within the kmail codebase I will do 
so, but if not (in case I do start this project) I will not hesitate to start 
a separate client (which is based on kmail for at least the mail rendering).
