I've got our main Samba server down for migration from FreeBSD to Gentoo
and I'm getting weirdities :(

Most recently, with a freshly-burned 1.4rc3 livecd, gets just past the
keymap selection to the line that says "---- Mounting the CD" and hangs.
I've booted another computer off the same CD and it gets past that point.
The motherboard is an Abit BP6 (not overclocked or anything), with a nice
IDE drive on the Hightpoint controller and a fairly generic CD drive.

This machine boots a 1.4rc2 livecd just fine. Unfortunately, "emerge
portage" doesn't seem to work on 1.4rc2 any more. When you get to the
emerge sync emerge portage step of the install (there's the CONFIG_PROTECT
and USE exports first) it gets to a certain point and then deletes its own
emerge binary. Doesn't help to skip the emerge portage and bootstrap from
stage 1; the same thing happens in the bootstrap process. I don't know
what happens if you skip the emerge portage and go to stage three; I might
have to try that if I can't get the rc3 disk to boot.

Anyone else see these oddities? Did you find a workaround, or recognize
where my error is?

TIA,

Rob
