1. I don't know if I understand your question, but you can use 'dmesg' to see 
a log of your kernel boot process.

2. Nope. But 'emerge xfree' will get you there.

3. There's a Desktop Guide at http://www.gentoo.org/ but I can't remember the 
URL from memory. Anymay, you can always do 'emerge kde' to install KDE.
