Most svga cards have support for the vesa frame buffer, so it does have FB 
support. Just not support for high resolutions + display frequencies + many 
colors or accelleration.

ps. Nvidia is not so bad, their drivers are fast, and really more buggy than 
the open drivers. At my work I have a matrox card of which the driver bails 
out sometimes too, only by a reboot, or even reset, can I get the display to 
change (frozen image) again.
