Here are your answers.
1. Do an emerge rsync and emerge directly from portage. It is obviously easier when using portage.
2. Only follow the Gentoo docs. The Gentoo developers have shifted some configuration files around. The official docs could get you confused. Also check out the gentoo forums (forums.gentoo.org), as other poeple may have put their own tips and tricks up from their experiences.
Like I said before, native MIDI support seems to be non-existant for our chipset. This should hopefully be fixed by the time 1.0 hits the streets. Hope this helps.

questions about choices.
1. Shall I compile from cvs or portage?
2. Shall I follow instructions from gentoo docs or from alsa site?
Instructions tend to differ slightly between the two.
