Thanks Kev I searched Google and found many emails re ACPI and sym53c8xx and smp but too much for me to understand. Thought acpismp=force might have fixed it but no. Tried pci=noacpi but this did not work. Whether acpi is included in the kernel or not did not make a difference. Now using acpi=off append in lilo.conf and put sym53c8xx back into the kernel and all is well. Cheers Kevin
