 you can also do "startx -- -dpi 96" (no quotes, of course)
I started having the same problem after adding an Nvidia Geforce 4 to my 
running machine and installing the unmasked drivers. I used the above 
command to start X until I emerged the 4191 masked drivers and the 
problem went away. YMMV, of course but maybe this will help you.
