I've heard that the problem seems to be (mostly) with one rsync mirror 
in Germany They are trying to fix the problem there or take the mirror 
off line until fixed In the mean time he suggests limiting your emerge 
sync's to US mirrors (if you're in the US) by adding the line:
SYNC="rsync://rsync.us.gentoo.org/gentoo-portage/"
to the end of /etc/make.conf
Those that choose not to add the line should note the mirror used for 
your sync and report that mirror if it causes problems.

The mirror in question is NOT the rsync mirror listed on the Gentoo 
mirrors page
