Hi, I'm having trouble compiling gcc-3.2.2-anything and evolution 1.2.2. When I try either of these packages, my computer (a dual Athlon on a Tiger MP) locks up within 10 - 20 minutes, requiring a hard reset. I have been leaving 'top' up on the terminal so I can see what things are like at lockup, and my load averages run just above 3.0 with both procs at 100%.
My suspicions generally would revolve around heat issues in this case, but as soon as I reboot, the CPU temperatures look fine at 53 and 59 deg C. The case is a nice Lian Li, with 5 fans. Could be a flaky processor, too. The system's pretty new - about 6 weeks old. But both of these issues seem disproved when I add gcc to the packages.masked file - then I can do emerge -up world and have it compile for hours straight. OpenOffice, for instance, kept the processors busy for a couple hours with comparable loads to a gcc-3.2.2 compile. Anyone have any ideas? My make.conf is nothing special - CFLAGS="-mcpu=athlon-mp -O3 -pipe" and MAKEOPTS="-j3". I can't imagine it's an optimization issue with those settings, but I guess I could bump the -O down to 1 or 2... Thanks! Rob Martin -- [EMAIL PROTECTED] mailing list
