Check Xnest manpage (Xnest is able to run an X window as a fake root
window, thus allowing multiple instances of programs which require to
run in root window, like xdm, gdm, kde, gnome). This is the way Gnome2 allows for 'new login' and 'new login in nested
window'. Xnest is useful also for a remote login via XDMCP in a local
window (like Exceed or Xwin32 do on Windows). I imagine you are looking
for something like the user switching capability in WinXP. Xnest does
something similar, but AFAIK you have to configure it yourself. Look also at gdm manuals for infos about gdmXnest, gdmXnestchooser and
gdmflexiserver (the gdm tools which, I suppose, use Xnest for multiple
graphical logins).

My favorite way to do it is with gdmflexiserver. That automatically creates a new X session on the next virtual TTY and runs GDM on it, with a "Quit" button (it quits automatically as well when the session is finished). It has a --xnest switch to do the same thing nested.

On that note: Is there any way to assign an x keybinding to that, so users could create a new session when someone has a locked screensaver running?
