[gentoo-user] out of sync emerge --pretend

Is there some way to force the emerge dependency database which I think 
is in is in /var/cache/edb/dep back in sync with the ebuilds?  
When I did a "emerge -- emptytree system --update --pretend" it printed 
a long list of "N" files.  When I ran the command with out pretend the 
first thing that it did was down load a new version of gentoo-sources 
which was not on the list.  I have been running into this problem quite 
often on this particular computer and would like to get everything 
synced without starting over from scratch.
