[gentoo-user] ?meaning of error message on kernel compile

Having failed any other way with kernel source code to get win4lin running 
(the kernel's compile and run ok, but can't install win4lin), I've tried 
applying the patches to a vanilla kernel 

Kernel-Win4Lin3-2.4.20.patch  mki-adapter.patch 

I used the instructions on the win4lin site: ie 

patch -p1 < patchname  > patch.log 2>&1 

In both cases I get the followin in the error message logs: 

patch: **** strip count l is not a number 

Any help appreciated. I'm almost at point of terminal frustration.
