Look at the dock. Icons with three little dots on them are launchers. When you click them, programs launch and the dots disappear. Now they are task switchers. Click on an icon to switch to the corresponding window. When you close a window, the dots will appear again. Also, programs not on the dock will have an icon (normally along the bottom of the screen) which works like a switcher.
