Hi ... My problem of the day is this. I chose a very wrong hour to rsync and update world my system (apparently). When I did that gentoo installed the latest developement-sources and module-nit-tools. These two were not part of my system before. I am using vanilla-source with ~x86. After this update (which overwrote my modutils) I reboot and I get an error saying the init script has detected that you are using a kernel compiled without DEVFS support. (press any key to continue :) ). The kernel boots with lots of error message from init.d scripts saying /var/lib/init.d/started file not found (and the directory is indeed not there). The xserver refuses to start... I check its error log and it couldnt open /dev/mouse . I check /dev and /dev/mouse is not there... so is /dev/cdroms/ and may be many more.... but the directory is not completely empty. I do /etc/init.d/pcmcia restart and my wireless is up but only after giving the error about init.d/started not found in /var/lib. I do emerge rsync again and then do emerge update to see that those 2 developement-sources and module-init-tools are gone from my list. Which meens they showed up in the first place only by some error. I update vanilla-sources and modutils (rebuild it) and reboot... still the problem is there. I rebuild devfsd and baselayout ... the problem is still there..... ofcourse I have been doing etc-update. I cannot understand how to fix this :( Meanwhile I am not able to open my xserver... cant check email on evolution, had to resubscribe to gentoo-user through my yahoo account from my fried's pc to post this question :) Hope somebody can suggest a quick fix quick :) Thanx a lot Spundun oh.. and reinstalling vanilla sources... I still had the bzImage files inside the source directory.. and also the configs didnt seem to have chaged.. so I am assuming those files were preserved accross installs.. funny... but good I guess
