Thanks for the info.  Now that I've investigated, the problem is if you
"su" from term you get a minimal $PATH:

# echo $PATH

if you Ctrl-Alt-F1 or do a "su -" as you suggest you get a much more
complete path... the important one in this case being:

/usr/i686-pc-linux-gnu/gcc-bin/3.2

you can change the default $PATH but hey, 'su -' works without any effort.
