I had the same problem. 1.4_rc3 was unable to boot. 
So i also used the 1.2 but only until the "bootmenu" (where you can add 
params) appeared.
Then I changed the cd to 1.4_rc3 and it worked fine.
(if you hit F2 (before and after changing) you will see that the helptext 
changes.

Hope this will help you, otherwise i also don't know how to fix this problem.
