try a new ide-cable.
I had similar errors.. I ignored them, because it was the dvd-rom... until the
day I lost my partition-table.. (stupid me.. dvd and harddisk at one cable) a
new cable solved this problem.

ps. I had 4 fatal data losses in the last 4 month.. the first was the cable.
The rest got eaten by the board.
