Check the files in /usr/X11R6/lib/X11/xkb. Do they *really* update in your last "emerge xfree"? I've had an issue with my keyboard (latinamerican layout 'la') where I've lost euro an at-sign. The problem was that portage forgot to update the files in the above directory, so check them out very carefully. HTH, Norberto
