I believe you are correct that "real" alpha transparency is a feature to be implimented in a future release of X. "Rasterman" is doing some interesting work with Enlightenment 0.17 (which is really just a test program for a set of very intriguing libraries he and others are working on, but nevertheless a usable window manager in its own right if you do not mind playing around with bleeding, and I mean truly blody at times, edge software), though I do not know if it has all of the capabilities requested here.
