Bug 24 is a feature request for "true transparency." I believe you are correct
that "real" alpha transparency is a feature to be implimented in a future
release of X. "Rasterman" is doing some interesting work with Enlightenment
0.17 (which is really just a test program for a set of very intriguing libraries
he and others are working on, but nevertheless a usable window manager in its
own right if you do not mind playing around with bleeding, and I mean truly
blody at times, edge software), though I do not know if it has all of the
capabilities requested here.
