Many 'home-users' tend to use the 'fetchmail-sendmail-procmail' bundle. Fetchmai fetches (hence the name ;) the mails, procmail sorts them with your filter criteria. Sendmail delivers them. I prefer exim instead of sendmail because it's easier to configure... There are quite a lot of good howto's! Use google...
