Hey great question!  I too have been wondering about this for quite some time.

My system runs perfectly fine, just as you had said... this really concerns me; is 
there a chance of ruining my hardware? i run gentoo on my nice brand-new thinkpad!  Is 
there an expected release of gcc any time soon??  While i dig on the 'net, any more 
information would be very well appreciated!
