Hello list,

I can't install Gentoo on an ASUS P4C800-Mainboard with an Intel P4 with hyperthreading. The boot-CD doesn't recognize the onboard Promise PDC80378- Controller (supporting Ultra-ATA133 and RAID). Connecting the harddisk to the ordinary IDE-Port (the same way you have to install WindowsXP) (with UDAM100) I can boot with the SMP-Kernel and go through the installation, from stage to stage, configuring and compiling the kernel in the end. In my configuration the root-device ("/") is /dev/hdd1 which is mounted on /mnt/gentoo during the installation. I've tried the latest kernels (2.4.21rc4, 2.5.70), but booting from the harddisk ends in either "kernel panic ... wrong root device "hdd1" ...", or in "OK, decompressing kernel image" without doing anything.
Can anybody help me? Does Linux already support this Promise controller? How do I have to configure the kernel?

Greetings from Heidelberg, Germany, Chris.
