Yes, i have an idea about that :)
I think you miss the HDLC support in your kernel. The speedtouch says you need that :

Character devices --->
[*] Non-standard serial port support
<M> HDLC line discipline support
[*]Unix98 PTY support

I'm not sure the last one (unix98 PTY) is required, but the first is.

You really should have a quick loot at this :

The 'Documentation' section is very easy to read, and some part deals with kernel 
options you have to set.
It's also available in french if it helps :)
