Hi Heschi,
   According to Tom, this problem with tomsrtbt is apparently a Gentoo
generated problem and not something specific to his disk. Here's a response
I got from him yesterday:

<SNIP>
The problem with this is not really that the kernel is too old, feature
wise, it is that the Gentoo C-library was compiled with options that are
checking the kernel version and requiring a specific numbered version or
higher. It is on my to-do list to jimmy the kernel to fake out the given
version, maybe make it identify itself as 99.99.999 or similar. Of course,
you can already fairly easily replace the kernel yourself- the problem is
that newer kernels are larger, and it is a silly tradeoff to do just for the
version number reported.  -Tom
<SNIP>

I presume this is true, but certainly don't know for sure, and I was able to
solve my problems with the Gentoo installation CD which was a much better
solution in my case.

Cheers,
Mark
