If I recall correctly there already is a file manager in vim. It is one of the modules that you can load at any time on vim. However I cannot help you with the how you do it because there has been some time since I read that in vim's manual (and I haven't reached that stage of addictiveness to vim to use its keybinds to a filemanager :-P).
