I second this. IMAP is much, much better. I am using fetchmail + qmail + courier-imap (with procmail and spamassassin thrown in for organizing my email and getting rid of most of the spam) and it works very well. I installed squirrelmail as well, and now I can access my email (via https) from any browser.
P.S. I don't know where you got the idea that fetchmail wasn't reliable, but it just ain't so.
