It's documented in help. I always do a program --help |
more (i.e. emerge --help |m ore) to check current options
as sometimes the man page is not totally uptodate.

What about using emerge -U ... ?
That should prevent any package from being downgraded.

Perhaps the problem is that '-U' is an undocumented
option?
man emerge should be updated. IMO '-U' is a FAQ.
