Hi all,

I've got a stange problem with PPPoE. I'm in the process of upgrading a
server to a new box and I'm trying to get the new server on the Internet
via PPPoE.

The old server works fine. I copied the config files from the old, to
the new server. When I plug the new server into the DSL modem, it won't
connect. It times out. I notice that the NIC seems to be in
100BaseT mode where I'm sure that the modem is a 10BaseT. It also seems
to drop the link light as soon as the adsl-start starts to execute.

However, when I run the pppoe-relay on the old server and connect the
new server back to the local net, it's able to get out just fine!

I've swapped (identical) NICs in each machine. The config seems correct
since it works in relay mode.

So, what is it about being directly connected to the modem that causes
problems?

Hope you can help,
Mike Diehl.
