[gentoo-user] VI issues

I have just installed my first gentoo server, and am using VI to edit files.  Here is the problem when I am in insert mode "i" and I press the up arrow key and new line is inserted with the letter "A".  When I press the right arrow the letter "C" is inserted in a new line.  By pressing the down arrow key "B" is inserted in a new line, and finally by pressing the left arrow key "D" is inserted on a new line.  What's amiss?
