If I remember correctly you don't need the arts plugin.
I'll check on that when I get to my system with KDE.

I don't think that arts is really necessary to get sound
in KDE. I'm not
a KDE user, so I might be wrong. Try another output
plugin in xmms (I'm
using the alsa one, works fine). I don't believe that it
would be
removed when it is the only possibility to get xmms
working in KDE.
