How exactly does a kernel find it's modules? (Say as opposed to the modules you compiled for 1.4.20) - what does Linux do to keep things seperate?
Well, I don't think you have to worry about conflicting modules from a 1.x series kernel since the kernel didn't have modules back then, IIRC :)
