When you merge OO portage fetches the source and compiles it. This takes
hours even on a fast machine, especially if it's also doing something
else other than just compiling, which is often the case if you're logged
in while compiling. The benefits of this is that it gets optimised for
your hardware and that you can taylor the package to some extent. Last
time I checked there were no localized OO 1.0.3 binaries available, but
since I compiled it my OO has swedish menus.

Since the oo compile is one of these compiles from hell (takes ages and
is a bit prone to break) there is the openoffice-bin ebuild which just
installs a precompiled binary.
