Thanks Matthias. It seems that I can comment out the line:
app-office/openoffice in /var/cache/edb/world and proceed with my 
# emerge -UD world as well. It's then a simple matter to go back and 
remove the comment.
Maybe I will submit a feature request to bugzilla.
