Hi! New to gentoo and this list,

I am trying to build a gentoo tree out of /, like this:

# ROOT=~mgadbois/gentoo emerge tiff

and I have the following output:
make[2]: Entering directory
`/usr/portage/tmp/portage/tiff-3.5.7-r1/work/tiff-v3.5.7/libtiff'
make[2]: `GNULDdso' is up to date.

/bin/sh /usr/portage/tmp/portage/tiff-3.5.7-r1/work/tiff-v3.5.7/port/install.sh -idb

done
ACCESS DENIED open_wr:

... etc ...

It fails while trying to install. The initial mkdir command that fails is ran from the
port/install.sh script.

A gentoo guru here says it is the sandbox that protects my environement. But the files
access look
legit to me!

I do not know if it is reproductable, as I have my own system to try it on. I rsync'ed
my portage
tree, without any difference.

I use:
USE="-3dnow alsa apache2 bonobo cdr dvd ethereal gdbm -kde mozilla -qt tcltk zeo usb cups
i8x0"
FEATURES="sandbox"

Any hints, help, fixes welcome to make it install properly!! Thanks!
