I'm not too Linux Sound Savvy yet, but did you go thru the ALSA setup
documentation on the Gentoo Site? It worked for me (my gentoo is on a Dell
Laptop).

Subject: [gentoo-user] no sound device ?

I cannot get any sound from my gentoo system.
When using, e.g., sox, trying 'play test.wav' on a wav file I get the
message:
"sox: Can't open output file '/dev/dsp' : no such device"
Actually I have in /dev a dsp file with a link to a dsp0 node file which
exists, has type c, major/minor 14/3. It had mode 600, I changed it to 666
with no avail.
