The only thing I can suggest is see what was upgraded at the time when kde
started running slow (you should be able to tell from emerge.log). Also
look at your USE flags, CFLAGS, etc (in /var/db/pkg/...).

A while back, I upgraded from 1.2 to 1.4, which includes upgrading gcc
from 2.95 to 3.x. For a while, I put up with very slow kde and apps
(mozilla was utterly unusable, though phoenix-bin was fine). Eventually,
I decided the upgrade was to blame, borrowed a hard drive, and installed
Gentoo 1.4 fresh in a chroot. KDE zooms now. I had also tried 'emerge
-e' along with various combinations of recompiling gcc and glibc, but
nothing less than the fresh install worked.
